Intuit yesterday said it had sold its Quicken personal finance software unit to H.I.G. Capital, a Miami-based private equity firm. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The announcement put an end to a, when told customers it was unloading three parts of its business -- Quicken, QuickBase and Demandforce -- to focus on its most profitable software and services, the QuickBooks small business accounting division and the seasonally-skewed TurboTax tax preparation group.

I've been struggling along on 2007 and hoping that Intuit would finally redo Quicken so that it was great again. Due to my disappointment with Quicken, I explored an alternative to Macintax/Turbotax and have settled on TaxAct online for doing my taxes and find it is just as good as and far less expensive than TurboTax. I tried H&R Block one year and it made a few very annoying mistakes which were very hard to work around but TaxAct is excellent for me. I would love to see Quicken return to excellence but there is a market opening for a hungry competitor to eat Intuit's lunch. Intuit sucks.

But it hasn’t be updated since summer of last year. Financial institutions love to show off how secure they are with big buildings and lots of marble. That’s a time honored method to display how trustworthy they are. Intuit’s history with Mac users, and now iPhone and iPad users, does not display a similar level of trust, despite an improved feature set and a well known brand name.
