It is now apparent that the problem was triggered by a file permissions conflict, and by transferring the licensing files back-and-forth on my Mac, I restored permissions to their proper setting. My entire Mac deployment setup uses HD cloning at the core and I've never had the office licensing reset. Well it's asking for my product key again, so I must have done something to piss it off! I recently had a MacBook crash and had all the data transferred from it to a new MacBook Air, including the Microsoft Office for Mac 2011.
